Missionaries

Dear churches and friends,

Last May while in the US, I became sick and had to be hospitalized for several days. My blood pressure was very high and the Doctors were very concerned about my kidneys. I made a decision to be treated naturally. Had I chosen to stay in the hospital I would not be able to return to the field for a long time. My wife came to join me and after several months of treatment I returned to the field where I have again been active since August. Please pray for me, that our Heavenly Father will fully restore my health.

Our mission churches continue growing, and our church in Porto Narinho in Colombia finally has a pastor and wife who are coming this December to restart this work. This brother is coming from Iquitos and is a Bible Institute graduate with some years of experience. His name is Alfredo and we are asking our friends and supporting churches that they would pray for him and his wife, that they may be able to gather again those who had been part of this fellowship. This new couple will be costing us 300 US Dollars every month. Pray that the Lord will supply for this extra expense.

The house church in Porto Narinho, where Brother Alfredo is going to minister has been finally paid. We thank our God for church and individual supporters who have made these final payments possible.

We are continuing construction of our new Sunday School/Bible Institute building on the ground in the back of Emanuel Baptist Church in Tabatinga. Two bathrooms have been built in the lower level, and in the front of the church we now have a lobby and two offices, one for the pastor, the other for the church. We have also changed our front door from a metal ware house door to wooden doors. We also have built a concrete shelter in the front to protect the new front doors and protect the people coming to church. We are building very slowly for lack of funds. As the members of Emanuel Baptist here in Tabatinga pray and give and as other churches partner with us in this project we will be able by God's grace to give continuity to this endeavor so important for the training of workers in this Amazon area in so much need of the Gospel.

We probably will need about 65,000 U.S. Dollars for this project. Our home church in Daytona has sent us $3,000.00 and we are very thankful. Any contribution sent to Pastor Tommy Thompson at Crossroads Baptist Church in Florida designated to this building, will be utilized exclusively for this project. Pastor Tommy's e-mail address is tthompson @crbaptist.com. Please pray and ask the Lord what part you as a church or as an individual might have in this worthwhile project.

We have 6 works in Spanish speaking communities in Peru and Colombia. We are now starting a new work with Portuguese speaking people in a community on the Amazon River. It is the second work in Portuguese, after Emanuel Baptist Church. Please pray that we may find a worker willing to lead this new group in this Portuguese speaking community.

We love to hear from you. We pray that many will be led by the Spirit of God to help us with the growth of this ministry here in Amazon country.

I hope you have had a wonderful holiday, and that you are recovered from WTB. I am sure that it was exciting and a blessing to many people. I pray that God will give you a great start to the best year yet. I want to thank you for all the support and prayers you gave me as I endeavored to move to Korea. You were encouraging, and I know that many people prayed for me. The Lord has helped me often since being here so I know your prayers have been answered.

Daegu is very crowded, all the buildings are either business or apartments. Everything is built straight up and side by side. The people are very social and friendly. This month one of the translators from church and I will be starting a Bible study in the area which we live. We are hoping to draw people from this neighborhood and get them connected with the church. This should be a good outreach for the area.

The school where I work is full of great kids and teachers. I am praying that I will be able to reach them for the Lord. The language is a barrier at the moment but I am sure God will help me find a way to get around it. I am looking forward to what God will do there.

I would appreciate your prayers for me to get over being sick. I am fighting all the new germs and being around a lot of kids I get my fair share and then some.

I know this is where God wants me and I am glad to be here. Thank you again for all of your love and support and prayers.

UPDATED OCTOBER 2009

August 23rd marked 10 years since leaving America for Iceland. We praise the Lord for keeping us thus far on the field. A decade may seem like a long time to many, but it is really only a drop in the bucket. I was recently encouraged to get a water bottle from the anniversary celebration of Pastor Bobby Roberson (Gospel Light Baptist, Walkertown, NC). On the side of the bottle it reads, “Celebrating 60 years of ministry.” That is encouraging and motivating! I look forward to seeing our 60th celebration of ministry in Iceland… I’ll be 90 years old.

I was reading my Bible one day and came across this verse, Ps 90:17 “And let the beauty of the LORD our God be upon us: and establish thou the work of our hands upon us; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it.” This truly describes mine and Vicki’s desire for the work here in Iceland. May God’s beauty be upon us and the work of our hands be established. He must do the work. Ps 127:1 “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it:”

It has been our joy to see the Lord build and keep this church in Iceland. I look forward to seeing what the Lord will do over the next 10 years. I am sure that it will be wonderful.

October 30th we will have six men from CrossRoads Baptist Church (Pastor Dan Proctor, Daytona Beach, FL) come to help us build in the church. They will be here for 8 days. The largest portion of the building is still unfinished. Last year, during the big land dispute with the city’s local government, in an attempt to pressure us into dropping the charges, they pointed out several things in our building that were wrong. We did not cave to the political pressures. The Lord protected us, and the 2 year legal dispute over the property was settled to our satisfaction. We must, however, fix those things that are wrong with the building. We are looking for teams of 5-7 men that are skilled in construction to come and help us. We can provide food, transportation, and shelter to all who come. If your church is interested in sending a building team, please contact me.

Also, please pray that we are able to complete this task quickly. We plan to get a container from the States in order to purchase a suspended ceiling, lights, flooring, and other materials for construction. Donations to help us build would be greatly appreciated.
